GU starts 2025 with first win of the season as Bison defeat Saint Elizabeth

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet men's basketball team started 2025 on the right foot with their first win of the season, 73-70, over Saint Elizabeth University. The Bison had help from four players in double figures here Saturday afternoon at Field House on Padden Court. 

Saint Elizabeth (3-10, 1-3 United East) opened with a quick 5-0 start at the 19:09 mark and Gallaudet (1-11, 1-3 United East) responded to stay in the game with a tie of 9-9 with 16 minutes left. Then Bison erupted with a 22-11 run to take a comfortable lead with a 31-20 at the 4:14 mark before Eagles finished the first half with 10-4 to cut the Bison's comfortable lead down by five, 35-30. 

Two seniors, Blessed Mbogo (Silver Spring, Md.) and Brandon Chung (Kahului, Hawaii) had double digits points with 11 and 10, respectively, that helped GU to lead the first half.

Gallaudet opened the second half with a 19-9 run with the help of first year Jory Valencia's (Riverside, Calif.) nine points and senior Malosi Viena's (Waipahu, Hawaii) six points with the score 54-39 at the 10:30 mark. After GU's biggest lead with 15 points, Saint Elizabeth was able to focus and exploded on the 29-14 run to tie the game with a score of 68-68 at the 1:47 mark. Chung helped and finished the game with another four points to secure the first win of the season with a score of 73-70.

Gallaudet had four different players in double digits. Mbogo leads the team with 19 points. Mbogo added seven rebounds and passed two assists. Chung scored 16 points and grabbed four rebounds. Valencia scored career-high 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds which are also his career high and passed four assists. Viena added 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Eagles had three players in double figures led by senior guard Tye-Rell Monroe who scored 21 points.

Gallaudet will bring momentum to Reading, Pa., this Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 7:30 p.m. to play a conference game at Penn St.-Berks (3-8, 2-2 United East).
