Hot start propels Bison past Penn College, 54-45

WASHINGTON – There was no stopping the hottest women's basketball team in the United East Conference here Saturday as Gallaudet University jumped out early on Penn College en route to a 54-45 victory.

Gallaudet (11-8, 8-2 United East) has won eight straight games and moved into a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings.

Penn College (11-9, 8-3 United East) scored the game's first bucket but then watched GU go on a 12-0 run in the first quarter before the host broke open the game in the second. The Bison outscored the Wildcats 16-2 to begin the second quarter as Gallaudet held its largest lead in the game at 25 points, 32-7.

GU took a 34-15 lead into the half.

The Bison were led offensively in the first half by sophomore guard Cam Lexow (Abington, Pa.) who scored 14 of her 16 points in the first 20 minutes of play. Lexow ended the game with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Penn College got back into the game in the third quarter as it made 46.7 percent of its shots (7 for 15) from the field while GU was limited to four field goals and 10 points.

The two teams struggled from the field in the fourth quarter as they combined to go 8 for 31 (25.8 percent) but the visitors outscored the Bison, 14-10.

Senior guard Raj Guettler (Frederick, Md.) and junior center Hannah Puent (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished with eight points each. Guettler matched Lexow with seven boards and three steals.

Penn College had three players in double figures led by Rachel Teats (six rebounds) and Lexi Troup with 13 points each. Teats led the Wildcats at the half with 10 points and three rebounds. Forward Gigi Parlante finished with a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds and added a game-high three blocks and five steals.

  • First-year forward Sophia Wascher (Noblesville, Ind.) led the team with four steals off the bench

UP NEXT
GU will travel north to Middletown, Pa., next Tuesday, Jan. 28, for a 5 p.m. conference game at Penn State Harrisburg (13-6, 7-4 United East). The Bison won the first meeting against the Lions, 81-76, back on Dec. 4 in the Field House.
