Barrage of 3-pointers end Gallaudet's eight-game win streak

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – It was a tough night for the Gallaudet University women's basketball team here Tuesday night as the Bison had their eight-game win streak snapped by Penn State Harrisburg, 80-64, in a United East contest.

The Lions dropped 12 3-pointers on the Bison, which is a season-high for a GU opponent, and was nearly perfect from the free-throw line. The two teams posted up nearly the same field goal percentage, 41.8 to 41.7 in favor of the host, and both made 12 free throws.

It seemed fitting in a game that saw 42 3-point shots taken that Gallaudet (11-9, 8-3 United East) started the game with a Cam Lexow (Abington, Pa.) 3-pointer just 34 seconds in. The Bison held an early 5-0 lead while the Lions looked out of sorts as they missed their first 10 shots from the field, which included four shots from outside.

Mikayla Coleman made Penn St. Harrisburg's first basket from the field with the first of her five 3-pointers in the game at the 4:23 mark to cut GU's lead to 7-5. The Lions finished the quarter 4 for 21 from the field but made three 3-pointers as the Bison held a 14-13 advantage.

Penn St. Harrisburg (14-6, 8-4 United East) made its move in the second and third quarters as the Lions found their stroke and sank four 3-pointers in each quarter and shot over 50 percent from the field. The Lions outscored the Bison, 21-7, in the second quarter and led 34-21 at intermission.

GU got as close as 10 points, 46-36 at 3:51 left in the third quarter, but Penn St. Harrisburg had an answer for each punch thrown by the buff and blue. The Lions used a late 10-0 run to reach their largest lead of the game at 24 points, 62-38. The host outscored the visitors, 30-20, in the high-scoring third.

Gallaudet held a 23-16 edge over Penn St. Harrisburg in the fourth, but it was not enough as time expired.

First-year forward Mackenzie Schirg (Factoryville, Pa.) scored a career-high 19 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Schirg netted 17 of her 19 points in the second half and made 7-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Senior guards Raj Guettler (Frederick, Md.) and Claire Ruiz-Tucker (Frederick, Md.) chipped in 12 points and three assists each. Guettler was second on the team with six rebounds (five defensive). Lexow finished with seven points after she scored five in the first quarter.

The backcourt trio of Guettler, Lexow and Ruiz-Tucker were held scoreless in the second quarter and each player had two points each in the third. Penn St. Harrisburg outscored Gallaudet, 51-27, during that pivotal time frame.

Coleman led all-scorers with 22 points while Jordan Carpenter, the second-leading scorer in the United East, was held below her average of 19.5 points per game. Carpenter tallied 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Giahny Correa came off the bench to score 16 points and eight boards while Sam Shaak was the fourth Lion in double digits with 10 points. Penn St. Harrisburg went 12-of-34 (35.3 percent) from 3-point range in the game.
