GU enjoys a spectacular weekend hosting the Worthington Classic

WASHINGTON – It was nearly a perfect weekend for the Gallaudet University women's volleyball team as the Bison hosted the 17th annual Worthington Classic in the Field House.

Gallaudet (14-4) began the day with a clean sweep of Marymount (Va.) University and had the chance to win all four matches this weekend by the same 3-0 margin, but the Bison dropped the second set to The Catholic University of America in the final match of the day. The Bison rallied and defeated the Cardinals in four sets, 3-1.

GU placed three players on the all-tournament team led by Most Valuable Player sophomore outside hitter Brielle Worley (Amarillo, Texas) along with junior setter Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.) and senior opposite Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.).

The Bison trio had a fabulous supporting cast to help them improve their record to 14-4 overall through the first month of the season.

In the four-set victory over Catholic; 25-14, 17-25, 25-16, 25-18, the Bison recorded a season-high 16 blocks. Sophomore middle hitter Jada Zarembka (Riverside, Calif.) had a career match with 13 blocks (three solo). Worley led the way with 20 kills (.372), 10 digs and two blocks while Perry added nine kills and three blocks. Gamble passed out 38 assists and made 10 digs, six blocks and four kills. Junior libero Nicole Hicks (Corona, Calif.) made a match-high 19 digs.

Catholic (7-10) was paced by Grace Guerin and Erin Faughnan as the pair made seven kills each.
