A day of firsts for Gallaudet women's volleyball

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Two new opponents lined up against the Gallaudet University women's volleyball team here Saturday on the second day of the Bonnie May Invitational hosted by Smith College.

Gallaudet (8-4) split the matches between Salem St. University and Middlebury College in the first contests against these schools. The Bison won the first match 3-1 over the Vikings before they lost 3-1 to the hands of the Panthers from Middlebury (3-4).

Earlier in the day, Middlebury defeated No. 18 Wesleyan University, 3-1, and the Cardinals turned around and lost 3-2 to the host Pioneers. GU defeated Smith in five sets on Friday night. 

In Gallaudet's first match of the day against Salem St., it was a quick start for the buff and blue. The Bison won the first two sets 25-12 and 25-11 before the Vikings (2-5) rallied and took the third set 23-25. GU rolled in the fourth set, 25-12.

Sophomore outside hitter Brielle Worley (Amarillo, Texas) led the way with 14 kills and 12 digs for the double-double. Junior outside hitter Citrine Lummer (Frederick, Md.) added 12 kills and 11 digs for a double-double. Senior opposite Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) was the third Bison in double figures for kills with 10.

Junior setter Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.) made a career-high nine service aces to go with 38 assists. The Bison finished with 15 aces against the Vikings.

Salem St. was led by Bella Coccia's six kills in the four-set loss.

Gallaudet had a few hours to rest up before it faced the Panthers later in the afternoon.

The Bison picked up where they left off with a 25-17 first set win over the Panthers (3-4). Middlebury responded and swept the rest of the match; 21-25, 16-25, 19-25.

Worley had a match-high 18 kills and nine digs while Lummer and Perry chipped in with nine kills each. Gamble tallied a double-double with 33 assists and 10 digs.

Middlebury's Molly Harrison matched Worley with 18 kills and six digs in the win.

UP NEXT
GU return home and will make a trip up to Frederick, Md., to face Hood College at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19.
