NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – It was a relentless effort by the Gallaudet University women's volleyball team Friday night as the Bison split the first day of the Bonnie May Invitational on the campus of Smith College.
Gallaudet (7-3) went the distance against the host Pioneers, 3-2, to start the tournament before having the chance to face its first nationally ranked team of the 2024 season. In a rematch of last year's NCAA tournament first round, GU went up against No. 18 Wesleyan (Conn.) University. Unlike last year, the Bison took a set from the Cardinals before GU lost in four, 3-1.
The Bison dropped the first set to Smith, 17-25, before taking the second and third sets by the scores of 25-20 and 25-14. Gallaudet tried to close out the match in four, but the Pioneers eked out a 19-25 win to force a fifth and decisive set. The two teams traded points in the highly contested fifth set before Gallaudet scored the final two points to win, 15-3.
The loss was the first for Smith (7-1) this season. This also marked the first-time the two schools faced each other.
