GETTYSBURG, Pa. – It had been a minute since the Gallaudet University women's volleyball team celebrated a win over Messiah College. The two squads met for the fifth time at the Battlefield Classic on Friday evening and the Bison won, 3-2, to defeat the Falcons for the first time since 2012.
Gallaudet (2-0) won the first, third and fifth sets over Messiah; 25-22, 19-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-12. The win snapped a seven-match losing streak to the Falcons. GU defeated Messiah, also in five sets, back on Aug. 31, 2012, at the Battlefield Classic. GU is now 2-1 vs. Messiah in five-set matches in the last 12 years.
GU turned around and played a four-set match against Dickinson College and after a tough 18-25 loss in the first set, the Bison swept the Red Devils, 25-13, 25-20, 25-18.
Junior setter
Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.) passed out 91 assists total in the two matches. Gamble passed out 52 in the first match against Messiah to go with 13 digs for a double-double.
Sophomore outside hitter
Brielle Worley (Amarillo, Texas) led the team in kills in both matches. The UT at Tyler transfer student had 16 kills and 13 digs in her Bison debut. Worley followed that up with 17 kills and seven digs against Dickinson.
Senior opposite
Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) had 15 kills, 11 digs and four blocks against Messiah and nine kills, six digs and three blocks in the nightcap.
Junior libero
Nicole Hicks (Corona, Calif.) led the team with 35 digs against Messiah.
Junior outside hitter
Citrine Lummer (Frederick, Md.) finished the night with 21 kills (13 vs. Messiah) and added 14 digs in both matches.
UP NEXT
Gallaudet will conclude the Battlefield Classic tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 31) with two matches as the Bison face Bridgewater (Va.) College and York (Pa.) College at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
