WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team wrapped up the regular season here Wednesday evening against Penn College of Technology as the visitors won, 80-61, in a United East game in the Field House on Padden Court.
Before the start of the game, the Bison men's basketball program recognized its seniors on Senior Night. Senior guard
Rory Lewis (Frederick, Md.) and two student support staff
Jayden Hemans and
Kelvin Lunn were honored by their coaches and teammates as family, friends and Bison Nation looked on. Lewis finished the game with a team best 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal in 36 minutes played. Lewis made four 3-pointers.
Gallaudet (3-22, 2-10 United East) officially clinched a postseason playoff spot tonight after the other conference game results got posted. The Bison are the No. 6 seed and will travel to No. 3 seed St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday, Feb. 17, for an afternoon game. The game time has not been determined yet but will be posted on GallaudetBison.com once the conference office announces times.
Penn College (9-15, 6-6 United East) jumped out early with a 23-6 lead less than eight minutes in and never looked back en route to the 19-point victory.
GU cut the lead down to 11 points, 38-27, with a 7-1 run at the 4:00 mark. The Bison were helped by Lewis, who scored all seven points in that run. The Wildcats led 45-34 at the half.
Gallaudet cut the lead by 10 points, twice, in the second half (17:33 and 9:52 mark) but Penn College withstood the Bison charge and picked up where it left off in the first half as the Wildcats outscored the Bison, 35-27, over the final 20 minutes of play.
Junior forward
Blessed Mbogo (Silver Spring, Md.) scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds. First-year guard
Zachary Bippus (Cheverly, Md.) added nine points, two assists and two rebounds off the bench.
The Wildcats had four players in double figures led by junior guard Gavin Barrett's triple-double as he scored 15 points, passed out 16 assists and grabbed 10 rebounds. Fellow junior guard Livingston Cross recorded a double-double with 26 points and 16 rebounds.

- Sophomore Bruce Brewer Jr. (Santa Fe, N.M.) added seven points and passed out three assists
- Junior forward Brandon Chung (Kahului, Hawaii) added six points, passed out five assists and grabbed four boards
- Gallaudet scored 17 points off 19 Wildcat turnovers
- GU scored 20 points in paint
- GU Athletics recognized Black History Night with special Black History Month t-shirts handed out before and during the game. Plus, slides were projected on the jumbotron of former black basketball players who starred for Gallaudet teams in the past.
- The department also held its Faculty Appreciation Night, which included recognizing the names of dozens of GU faculty members on the jumbotron. The faculty members were invited by the Bison basketball teams as a thank you for making a difference in the classroom and were invited by the basketball teams to the game.
- Before the game, the Gallaudet Athletics Department and men's basketball program paid tribute to former Bison men's basketball head coach William Schyman Jr., who passed back in 2022. Schyman's daughter, Arlene Reading, and other family members were on hand for the special tribute. Coach Schyman led the Bison men's basketball program from 1962-68.
UP NEXT
Gallaudet will make its first postseason appearance since the 2017-18 season. The Bison will face a familiar foe in the Seahawks from St. Mary's. The two teams have already played three times this season as SMC (14-11) won all three games.
