ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Gallaudet University men's basketball team wrapped up the 2023-24 season here Saturday afternoon in the first round of the United East-Volt Division First Round with a 70-47 loss to St. Mary's College of Maryland in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.
Gallaudet (3-23), the No. 6 seed, had a quick early 5-3 lead just four minutes in after junior forward
Blessed Mbogo (Silver Spring, Md.) made a 3-pointer. GU kept it a close game in the first half and was only down two points, 11-9, with 10 minutes to go before the half. GU continued to battle with the Seahawks and only trailed by eight points, 31-23, at halftime.
St. Mary's (15-11), the No. 3 seed, started the second half with a 13-2 run in the first four minutes and was able to control the game to secure the victory. The Seahawks outscored the Bison 39-24 during the final 20 minutes of play.
The Bison couldn't stop the hot shooting from the Seahawks, who made 13 of 26 shots (50 percent) from the field and 5 of 11 from the 3-point range in the second half.
Mbogo finished with 12 points, five rebounds, four steals and one assist. He shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line and swished 2 out of 4 from 3-point range. Senior guard
Rory Lewis (Frederick, Md.) finished his career with 12 points and grabbed three rebounds to go with six steals and one assist. Lewis shot a perfect 8 of 8 from the free throw line. Lewis concludes his four-year career with 896 points, 279 rebounds, 150 3-pointers, 130 assists and 106 steals in 94 games played (67 starts).
Sophomore guard
Bruce Brewer Jr. (Santa, Fe, N.M.) added five points, one rebound and one steal.
The Seahawks had four players in double figures led by guard Daryn Alexander who scored 19 points.
St. Mary's advances to Monday's semifinal round where the Seahawks will travel north to face No. 2 seed Lancaster Bible College.
