Bison victorious in their home opener against Trinity Washington

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's basketball celebrated its first win of the season here Tuesday night on Padden Court in the Field House after the Bison defeated Trinity Washington University, 78-43.

Gallaudet (1-3) was in a back-and-forth game with Trinity Washington (1-5) in the first quarter as the Bison were lucky to be up one, 19-18.

Trinity's Shayonna Nave scored eight of her 11 points in the first 10 minutes of play.

The Bison regrouped and stepped up their defense against the Tigers.

GU held the Tigers to nine and four points, respectively, over the second and third quarters of play. On the flipside, the Bison posted totals of 22 and 21 during the same span.

Senior guard Raj Guettler (Frederick, Md.) led the team with a double-double of 21 points, 14 rebounds and two steals. Sophomore guard Cam Lexow (Abington, Pa.) chipped in 14 points, nine boards, five assists, four steals and two blocks.

Senior center Alexis Roberts (Newton, Miss.) came off the bench to net 12 points and grab 11 rebounds (eight on the offensive end) and added two steals in 15 minutes of work.

Gallaudet's fourth and final player in double figures was senior Claire Ruiz-Tucker (Middletown, Md.) with 10 points and three steals.

Trinity was paced by Hermela Shimels's double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

GU led 40-25 at the half.

Gallaudet will welcome Russell Sage College (1-1) to campus this Friday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. in a non-conference game.
