GALLOWAY, N.J. – A surging Gallaudet University women's basketball team nearly came back to defeat Stockton University here Wednesday evening on the road. The host Ospreys held off the Bison in a 66-60 win.
Gallaudet (0-3) battled back from being down 19 points in the first half to pulling to within two points in the closing minutes of play. A pair of Stockton 3-pointers pushed the Ospreys to victory.
Stockton (2-0) jumped out to an early 12-0 lead just five minutes into the game. GU got on the scoreboard but trailed 23-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The Ospreys lead ballooned to 19 points, 35-16, midway through the second quarter but GU didn't quit. The Bison slowly chipped away at the deficit. Stockton took a 39-24 lead into halftime.
Stockton's lead held steady at 12 points, 48-36, after the completion of the third quarter.
Gallaudet made up ground in the fourth quarter as the Bison outscored the Ospreys, 24-18.
The Bison got the deficit down to single digits quickly into the final quarter. GU pulled to within two, 58-56, with two minutes to play. The two teams combined to go to the free-throw line 24 times that quarter as the Bison made 14 of 16.
Sophomore guard
Cam Lexow (Abington, Pa.) finished with game-high marks for points (20), rebounds (eight) and steals (five). She shot 50 percent from the field (7 for 14) and went 5 for 7 at the free-throw line.
Jackson State University transfer
Alexis Roberts (Newton, Miss.) made her Bison debut and netted 15 points in 15 minutes off the bench. Roberts went to the free-throw line 10 times and made seven (70 percent) for nearly half of her point total.
Sophomore guard
Seanna Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) tallied seven points while senior
Claire Ruiz-Tucker (Middletown, Md.) recorded six points and five steals.
Stockton's Katie Rausch led the Ospreys with 18 points as she made five 3-pointers on eight attempts and swiped three steals from the Bison.
