WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University, the NCAA Division III women's volleyball leaders in service aces, added 40 more to its total here Saturday afternoon on Padden Court in the Field House in two straight set wins.
Gallaudet (17-4, 2-0 United East) took down conference foe Penn St.-Brandywine by the score of 25-9, 25-7, 25-7 to begin the home tri-match. The Bison later took down Trinity Washington University by the score of 25-3, 25-5, 25-6.
In the other neutral site match, Penn St.-Brandywine (3-13, 0-2 United East) beat Trinity Washington (1-9) in straight sets; 25-15, 25-17, 25-16.
The Bison served up 18 aces against Penn St.-Brandywine and 23 against the Tigers. The 23 service aces are the most service aces by a Bison team since Oct. 16, 2010, when GU had 24 against Saint Elizabeth University.
Junior setter
Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.) led the way with a combine 13 aces while sophomore middle hitter
Jada Zarembka (Riverside, Calif.) finished with 12. The pair had nine services aces in a match. Gamble served up nine aces against Penn St.-Brandywine and Zarembka with nine against Trinity.
Gamble finished the day with 50 assists as GU coach
Lynn Ray Boren played all 12 players in uniform in both matches.
Sophomore outside hitter
Brielle Worley (Amarillo, Texas) had 17 kills against Penn St.-Brandywine with an eye-popping .652 hitting percentage with 23 swings and two errors.
Junior middle hitter
Candace Broadnax (Springfield, Va.) matched her career-high with eight kills against Trinity. Fellow junior opposite
Jazelina Bumbala (Austin, Texas) matched her career-high with five kills against Trinity.
Sophomore outside hitter
Olivia Taufu'i (Blackfoot, Idaho) set a new career-high with six kills against the Tigers. Fellow sophomore defensive specialist
Ashlene Etkie (Austin, Texas) matched a season-high with four aces against Trinity.
UP NEXT
Gallaudet will host Cedar Crest College (6-11, 1-1 United East) in a conference match this Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Field House. This is a rematch of last year's United East Conference championship match that the Bison won in four sets.
