LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its weekly Women's Division III Player of the Week on Tuesday and selected Gallaudet University sophomore outside hitter
Brielle Worley (Amarillo, Texas) for the week ending Sept. 29.
Worley led the Bison to a 5-0 record last week as GU won the Worthington Classic and only dropped one set out of 16 played. Worley compiled 96 kills with a .362 hitting percentage to go with 36 digs, seven blocks, and six aces. The UT at Tyler transfer added 16 kills in a home win over Goucher to finish the week with 112 kills.
Worley leads all NCAA Division III women's volleyball in kills (324) and points (361), second in kills per set (4.76), fifth in total attacks (753) and seventh in points per set (5.31). Gallaudet as a team leads Division III in service aces (195), 12th in team kills (825), 13th in hitting percentage (.248) and 16th in team assists (748).
"It is rare for a Gallaudet Bison player to receive this kind of national recognition. It's truly an honor for Brielle to be named AVCA Division III National Player of the Week," said Gallaudet coach
Lynn Ray Boren. "Brielle played exceptionally well last week as we went 5-0 in those home matches."
This is the second Bison player Coach Boren, now in his 19th season, has had garner AVCA Division III National Player of the Week honors. The last came on Oct. 30, 2006, when
Tamijo Foronda was selected.
Worley is the fourth Bison to earn this national honor from Gallaudet. The others include Foronda,
Karen Gilbert (Sept. 18, 1995) and
Dyan Kovacs (Oct. 31, 1994). That trio of Bison are also enshrined in the Gallaudet Athletics Hall of Fame and Foronda's #9 jersey is one of two retired women's volleyball numbers (#6
Ronda Jo Miller being the other).
Worley is the fifth 2024 AVCA Women's Division III Player of the Week honoree this season as she joins; UW-Whitewater outside hitter Jenna Weinfurt (Sept. 1), Juniata setter Olivia Foley (Sept. 8), UW-Whitewater outside hitter Alayna Jansky (Sept. 15) and Washington-St. Louis setter Sam Buckley (Sept. 22).
