GU freeze out Nittany Lions in home win

WASHINGTON – The wins continue for the Gallaudet University women's basketball program as the Bison defeated Penn St.-Berks, 92-36, in a United East conference game Tuesday night on Padden Court in a frigid Field House building.

The nation's capital received its first measurable snow in nearly two years on Monday and that forced many schools and colleges to close on Tuesday. The freezing temperatures outside seeped into the Field House as the teams, fans and officials had to play through the cold and stay bundled up.

Gallaudet (11-6, 4-1 United East) warmed up on the court as the Bison controlled the game from the jump as the Bison zoomed up and down the court. GU scored early and often against the overmatched Penn St.-Berks (1-14, 0-6 United East) squad.

The Bison held the Nittany Lions to single digits for the first three quarters. GU scored 30 in the opening 10 minutes and surpassed 22 points in the second and 25 in the fourth. Gallaudet took a 52-15 lead into halftime.

In the end, Gallaudet finished with a season-high mark of 92 points, the most since it scored 98 on Feb. 16, 2019, at Penn College.

The 56-point win is the largest in the series history and the biggest since last year's 59-point win at Wells College (77-18 on Jan. 6, 2023).

GU has now won five straight games to begin the month of January and hold a six-game win streak over Penn St.-Berks dating back to the 2019-20 season.

Bison first-year forward/guard Cam Lexow (Abington, Pa.) had another career night as she finished with new season-high marks for points (31), field goals made (13) and 3-point field goals made (five). Lexow added five assists, three steals and three rebounds in 26 minutes played.

Senior forward Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) narrowly missed a triple-double with 16 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists. Junior guard Claire Ruiz-Tucker (Frederick, Md.) passed out a career best nine assists to go with 11 points, four boards and four steals.

The game was a great one for the Bison bench as many reserves logged key minutes and filled up the box score. First-year players Kate Aquino Uribe (Downey, Calif.) and Michaela Kelley (Austin, Texas) set career marks for points with eight and six, respectively. Aquino Uribe finished with six rebounds and Kelley grabbed five boards and made two blocks.

The Nittany Lions were led by Ashlyn Clark and Hailey Miller as the duo scored eight points and made three steals each.
