Gallaudet picks up first conference win with a 77-point performance against Penn St.-Berks

WASHINGTON. - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team celebrated its first conference win of the 2023-24 season here Tuesday night as the Bison defeated Penn St.-Berks, 77-67, in a United East Conference game.

Gallaudet (2-15, 1-4 United East) opened the lead and had control in the first 16 minutes of the first half until Penn St.-Berks (2-14, 1-5 United East) took the lead after a 16-3 run at the 3:12 mark. The Nittany Lions held a 43-41 lead at halftime.

Junior forward Blessed Mbogo (Silver Spring, Md.) scored all of GU's nine points in the first six minutes of the second half to take the 50-46 lead.

At the 5:11 mark, Penn St.-Berks took the first lead of the second half after a 12-0 run with a 63-62 score. GU bounced back with a 10-0 run at the 2:36 mark to have a comfortable 72-63 lead to finish the game with a sweet 10-point victory. The 77 points scored is a new season-high for the Bison. Gallaudet also shot 58.3 percent in the second half as the Bison scored 36 points.

Gallaudet had three different players in double digits. Mbogo had a double-double with a team best 25 points and 11 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and two blocks. Junior forward Brandon Chung (Kahului, Hawaii) recorded a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Rory Lewis (Frederick, Md.) added 15 points, grabbed five rebounds and two steals. 

The Nittany Lions had four players in double figures led by guard Marquis Ferreira who scored 21 points.

  • Sophomore guard Bruce Brewer Jr. (Santa Fe, N.M.) added two points and seven assists
  • GU had 19 team assists

Gallaudet will bring momentum to Williamsport, Pa., this Saturday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. to play a conference game at Penn College (5-12, 2-3 United East).
