WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team came up short against St. Mary's College of Maryland, 67-65, Saturday in a United East conference game, in the Field House on Padden Court.
Gallaudet (1-15, 0-4 United East) took a 49-47 lead with 7:55 left in regulation when junior forward
Brandon Chung (Kahului, Hawaii) made a nice layup. The two teams stayed within single digits of each other the entire contest.
St. Mary's (9-8, 4-0 United East) used a 12-7 run to regain control as the Seahawks led 61-54 with two minutes left in regulation.
GU continued to hang around thanks to senior guard
Rory Lewis (Frederick, Md.) and junior forward
Blessed Mbogo (Silver Spring, Md.). The duo scored Gallaudet's final nine points in the close-knit game.
Lewis drained his third 3-pointer of the half with 48 seconds left as the Bison trailed by five, 65-60. Lewis added a layup with 10 seconds left before the Seahawk guard Daryn Alexander threw down an uncontested dunk. Mbogo sunk a buzz-beater 3-pointer to conclude the scoring at 67-65.
Lewis (six rebounds) scored 16 of his game-high 19 points in the second half. Mbogo finished with 16 points, six boards, two assists, one block and one steal. Chung matched Mbogo with 16 points, six boards, four assists, two blocks and one steal.
Gallaudet jumped early to lead 20-17, eight minutes into the first half. St. Mary's answered and used a 4-0 run to take the lead, 21-20, at the 6:45 mark. The Bison weren't discouraged as they rallied and took a 30-29 lead into halftime.
The Seahawks started hot in the second half with an 18-9 run nine minutes in. GU went on its own run, 10-0, to take a 49-47 lead.
The second half featured four lead changes and three ties.
The Seahawks had four players in double figures led by forward Jake Koverman who scored 15 points.
