WASHINGTON - The bats started hot for Gallaudet University here Sunday as the Bison jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead over Penn College in a United East Conference baseball game at Hoy Field.
The Bison, the visiting team for this nine-inning game, batted first and scored three runs in the first and one in the second before the Wildcats answered with four runs in the bottom of the second and went on to score a run in every inning but the sixth en route to a 20-7 win.
Gallaudet (7-17, 1-5 United East) jumped on Wildcats starting pitcher Chance Webb (3-2), who gave up five runs in the first three innings before three scoreless innings. Webb finished the game with six strikeouts and three walks.
Penn College (10-8, 5-1 United East) took the lead for good in the bottom of the third with two runs as the Wildcats led 6-5. Penn College broke things open in the seventh with four runs and added eight additional in the eighth.
Bison starting pitcher Shea Sliva-Wynne (Rosenberg, Texas) took the loss as he allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits, four walks and one strikeout in four innings pitched.
The top of the Bison order, batters 1 through 4, all had two or more hits as they finished 9-for-18 (.500) with six runs scored and three runs driven in. Three of the nine hits went for extra-bases including two doubles and one triple.
Junior catcher Salvador Diaz (Norwalk, Calif.) led the buff and blue with a 3-for-5 line at the dish as he tripled and scored two runs and drove in one. Senior Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) and the Sliva-Wynne brothers, Shea and Austin, recorded two hits each and scored at least one run. Drolsbaugh and fellow senior Austin Sliva-Wynne (Rosenberg, Texas) had one double each.
Penn College third baseman Cameron Dick led all batters with a perfect 5-for-5 performance at the plate with five RBI and two runs scored.
This game completed the three-game series between Gallaudet and Penn College as the Wildcats swept the Bison. This game got moved to Hoy Field due to rain over the weekend made Bowman Field unplayable.
