WASHINGTON – After the snow subsided on a chilly overcast Saturday afternoon in the nation's capital the Gallaudet University baseball team went up against SUNY Canton on the second day of the Bison Baseball Classic.
Gallaudet (3-3) behind strong pitching and hitting rolled to a 15-1 win over the Roos (0-1).
The late-morning snow showers that hit Hoy Field, a turf field with lights, forced the suspension of the first game between RIT (1-0) and the Roos with SUNY Canton up 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth. After the Tigers left campus and the precipitation over with, the Bison and Roos played a complete nine-inning game with no delay or issue.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Johnathan Guerrero (Indio, Calif.) made his 2023 season debut on the mound and he cruised for the first six innings of the game. Guerrero (1-0) threw six scoreless innings, allowed three hits, three walks and struck out five. The lefthander also picked off two baserunners to help his own cause and junior catcher
Salvador Diaz (Norwalk, Calif.) threw out one baserunner.
Junior
Joshua Dugan (San Antonio, Texas) threw three effective innings of relief as the Roos only scored one run in the top of the eighth as Dugan earned the rare three-inning save.
At the plate, the Bison went to work and tallied 17 hits which included five extra-base hits. Diaz went 3-for-6, scored twice and drove in three runs. Dugan (3-for-4) hit two doubles and recorded four RBI while senior centerfield
Austin Sliva-Wynne (Rosenberg, Texas) went 2-for-3, scored three runs, hit a triple, drove in one and walked twice.
Freshman outfielder
Brandon Washington (Citronelle, Ala.) used his speed to tally four singles, scored twice and drove in a run. Senior third baseman
Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) finished with a 2-for-4 line with two runs, three RBI, a double, one walk and got hit by the pitch. Guerrero helped his own cause with a 2-for-4 performance at the dish with two runs, one RBI and one walk and got hit by the pitch. Gallaudet had seven batters score two or more runs and drive in at least one run.
Roos starting pitcher Gavin Neuland (0-1) took the loss on the bump as he threw five innings and surrendered four runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out two.
