WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team came up short against St. Mary's College of Maryland, 61-51, here Sunday in the consolation game of the Battle of D.C. & Maryland hosted by GU in the Field House on Padden Court.
Gallaudet (0-5) opened with a fast start as it led by 13 points, 16-3, nine minutes into the first half. St. Mary's (2-3) answered and used a 17-3 run to take its first lead, 20-19, at the 4:57 mark. The Seahawks took a 30-25 lead into halftime.
Bison were outscored in the second half by five points, 31-26, as the Seahawks never lost the lead and managed the time management to finish the game with a win.
Junior forwardÂ
Blessed Mbogo (Silver Spring, Md.) led Gallaudet with 19 points, five rebounds, five steals and two blocks. Mbogo swished 3 of 7 shots from 3-point range in 35 minutes played. For his efforts, Mbogo was named to the all-tournament team.
Senior guardÂ
Rory Lewis (Frederick, Md.) added 14 points, four assists, two steals and a board.Â
St. Mary's sophomore guard Micah Henry was the Seahawks representative on the all-tournament team after he scored 17 points in the win. Senior forward Gary Grant had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds while senior forward Hollique Johnson added nine points and 12 rebounds.
The two Maryland teams in the tournament won on Sunday as Hood College (4-1) held off The Catholic University of America, 65-63, to win the Battle of D.C. & Maryland for the third time in program history. The two teams met in last year's championship as the Cardinals won that match-up, 83-71. Hood last won the Battle of D.C. & Maryland in 2019 along with the first year in 2018.
Hood junior guard Garrison Linton was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and joined teammate Justin Gielen on the all-tournament team. Catholic's two selections to the all-tournament team included Brian Herbert and Sean Neylon as the Cardinals (3-1) lost for the first time this season.

- Sophomore guard Samer Sawan (Toronto, Ontario) scored six points from 3-point range (2-for-3) off the bench

Gallaudet will have two days to rest before it is back in action this Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 5:30 p.m. to play a non-conference home game against Salisbury University (3-2) in the Field House.
