TOWSON, Md. – Gallaudet University's bench erupted onto the floor at the Decker Sports & Recreation Center as the final buzzer sounded here Friday evening as the Bison celebrated an 84-82 come-from-behind victory over Goucher College.
Gallaudet (1-0) outscored the host Gophers 26-16 in the fourth quarter on the first day of the Renie Amoss Tip-Off Tournament.
Junior guard
Claire Ruiz-Tucker (Frederick, Md.) scored the game-winning shot with nine seconds left in regulation.
Goucher (0-1) had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer as the Gophers got off a shot, but it didn't go into the basket.
The Bison enjoy their first season-opening win in 11 years when GU defeated Christendom College, 69-29, to begin the 2012-13 season. In fact, Ruiz-Tucker played on that Bison team and scored eight points in that season opener. Flash forward a decade and Ruiz-Tucker returned to the Bison and scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.
Gallaudet had three players record double-doubles in the win. Sophomore guard
Olivia Brown (Miami, Fla.) had a career game with 26 points scored and 12 rebounds tallied. First-year guard
Cam Lexow (Abington, Pa.) scored 20 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals in her Bison debut. First-year forward
Michaela Kelley (Austin, Texas) added six points and six rebounds in the win.
The Bison led 22-16 after the first quarter but trailed 45-39 at the half.
GU trailed 80-70 with 5:29 left in the fourth quarter as the Bison outscored the Gophers 14-2 down the stretch to secure the victory. Tucker scored eight of the 14 points in the final minutes by making shots from the field and at the free-throw line.
Goucher was paced by Merci Turner's 21 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block performance. Brianna Johnson and Maiya Villanueva chipped in 16 and 11 points, respectively, in the loss.
BISON TRACKS
- First year Ashley Harlicker (Shenandoah, Texas) scored four points and grabbed 13 rebounds and made a team-high three steals off the bench
- Gallaudet held a huge difference in rebounds, 74-45, as the Gophers took 89 shots
- The Bison scored 54 points in the paint
- GU tallied 23 second chance points and netted 20 points in fast break situations
- The game featured nine ties and seven lead changes
- The last time GU began a season against Goucher was in 2019 (Nov. 11). The Gophers won in the Field House, 62-58
- Gallaudet last won on Goucher's court back in Dec. 4, 2004, with a 77-74 victory

Gallaudet will face Randolph-Macon College (1-1) tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 11) at 1:30 p.m. on the second day of the Renie Amoss Tip-Off Tournament. The Yellow Jackets defeated Albright College, 72-64, on Friday.
