WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team can not be stopped as the Bison continue to roll through the competition and pick up win after win. The Bison picked up their 28th victory and 13th straight with a 3-1 home win over Shenandoah University here Wednesday night to complete the regular-season schedule.
Gallaudet finishes the regular-season with a 28-3 record, which is the highest win percentage (.903) for a regular-season under Head Coach
Lynn Ray Boren in his 18 seasons at GU. The 28 wins are the most in a season since 2012 when GU posted a 31-7 record. GU has tallied an impressive 25-1 record after the Bison began the season 3-2.Â
GU was in control of the first set on Wednesday night as the Bison won 25-21. The next two sets the Bison walked through the motions and allowed the Hornets (8-18) to hang around and even take the second set, 25-27, before GU won the third set 25-21. Gallaudet came to life in the fourth set as its passing and attacks become stronger as the Bison slammed down several big kills and leaped up to make block after block as they won, 25-15.
Senior outside hitter
Natalie Clayberg (Pella, Iowa) led the way with a match-high 17 kills and 14 digs to go with four blocks against her uncle's team. The Hornets are coached by
Kent Clayberg, now in his fifth season at the helm. Sophomore
Citrine Lummer (Frederick, Md.) tallied her own double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Junior setter
Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.) passed out 44 assists to go with 12 digs for the third double-double in the match. Gamble served up three aces and made three blocks and six kills in the win. Sophomore
Gisella Visco (Riverside, Calif.) recorded half of GU's aces (10 total) with five service aces and 14 digs. Senior libero
Leila Sicoli (Austin, Texas) made a team best 17 digs while first-year
Jada Zarembka (Riverside, Calif.) had a match-high seven blocks (one solo).Â
Gallaudet finished the match with 54 kills, 10 aces and 17 blocks, a new season-high total.Â
Shenandoah was paced by Jillian Warter's 14 kills and Kylie Danella's 36 assists in the loss.Â
This was the second time GU had faced Shenandoah this season. GU swept the Hornets back on September 9 as the Bison participated in the Shenandoah Invitational. In an odd twist of the 2023 schedule this is the third time, this season, GU has faced the same opponent twice (Franciscan, Marymount, Shenandoah).
Before the start of Wednesday night's match the GU volleyball program recognized
Tara Miles, professor in the social work department and cheerleading head coach, during Faculty Appreciation Night at the Field House.Â
