GU wins thrilling match over Catholic on Dig Pink night

WASHINGTON – Everything fell into place for the Gallaudet University women's volleyball team here Wednesday night on Padden Court in the Field House as the Bison won a thrilling four-set match, 3-1, over The Catholic University of America Cardinals.

Gallaudet (23-3) turned in one of its most complete matches of the 2023 season as the Bison dug deep and showed why they wanted it more in front of 305 pink clad fans. GU participated in the AVCA Dig Pink Night and wore special pink jerseys for the evening.

The Bison and Cardinals pushed the first and fourth sets past 25 points as both teams picked up key side outs to continue the set. Catholic (15-8) won the first set 27-29 before GU won the next three; 25-17, 25-20, 26-24. The four-set match featured 23 ties and 16 lead changes. The Bison had 13 aces and 12 blocks in the match.

First-year middle hitter Jada Zarembka (Riverside, Calif.) had a big game up front with eight blocks (one solo) and had a match-high five aces. Senior outside hitter Natalie Clayberg (Pella, Iowa) had a team-high 18 kills to go with 19 digs for the double-double and served up three aces. Senior outside hitter Adele Daniels (Frederick, Md.) tallied 13 kills and 11 digs for the double-double. Junior opposite Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) recorded 11 kills and seven block assists. Junior setter Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.) passed out 45 assists while senior libero Leila Sicoli (Austin, Texas) finished with 27 digs. 

Catholic was led by Olivia Blondin's 23 kills and 17 digs to pace the Cardinals.

Gallaudet will play host to Penn St.-Harrisburg (8-11, 1-1 United East) this Friday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Field House on Padden Court in a key United East Conference – Volt Division match.
