STANDISH, Maine – Head coach
Lynn Ray Boren celebrated his 400th career win leading the Gallaudet University women's volleyball program here Saturday after the Bison won two matches at Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
The milestone win happened in the second match as GU (21-3) defeated the Monks, 3-1, after coasting to the first set wins; 25-14, 25-13. The Bison stumbled in the third set as the Monks won it, 16-25, before the Bison sealed the win with a 25-20 fourth-set win.
Senior outside hitter
Natalie Clayberg (Pella, Iowa) and junior opposite
Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) led the Bison with 11 kills each. Clayberg completed the double-double with 10 digs while Perry made three blocks (one solo). Junior setter
Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.) passed out 34 assists and made 13 digs for a double-double. Gamble also added three aces and two blocks. First-year middle hitter
Jada Zarembka (Riverside, Calif.) led the Bison with three block solos.
In the first match, the Bison came out on fire and posted strong attack percentages in the first two sets as GU led 2-0 behind 25-16 and 25-18 set wins. Gallaudet got a little sloppy with nine attack errors in the third set but held off Elms College, 25-22, in the non-conference contest.
Clayberg had a double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs to go with two service aces. Sophomore outside hitter
Citrine Lummer (Frederick, Md.) matched Clayberg with 12 kills and completed the double-double with 10 digs. Gamble passed out 35 assists, made seven digs and two blocks. Sophomore libero
Nicole Hicks (Corona, Calif.) led the Bison with 20 digs.
Coach Boren is now 400-239 (.626) in 18 seasons at Gallaudet. He trails Gallaudet's all-time winningest women's volleyball coach
Peg Worthington, who posted a record of 615-305 (.668) in her 26-year career (1970-81, 1984-97). Worthington was inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December 2013.
On Friday, Gallaudet's volleyball team visited the students at The Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Falmouth, Maine.
