Gallaudet at SUNY Morrisville bout needs double overtime

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - Time was not on the side of Gallaudet University here Saturday as the Bison lost 87-78 in double overtime to SUNY Morrisville in a United East Conference men's basketball game in the Student Activities Center.

Gallaudet (1-11, 0-3 United East) led the majority of the game against SUNY Morrisville (5-6, 1-1 United East) but the Mustangs fought back to force overtime and after an additional five minutes the two teams needed a second overtime period to determine the outcome.

GU held an 11-point lead, 62-51, when sophomore forward Blessed Mbogo (Silver Spring, Md.) completed a three-point play after a made layup and free throw at the 6:57 mark in the second half.

The Mustangs used a 12-4 run to close out the final four minutes of play to knot the game at 70 apiece. In that span, Gallaudet turned the ball over six times which led to seven of the 12 points scored by SUNY Morrisville.

In the first overtime period, Gallaudet scored the first four points to take a 74-70 lead with four minutes left. SUNY Morrisville answered with a 3-pointer from Shykell Brown (17 points) and later led by two, 76-74, with 39 seconds left.

The Bison didn't fold as senior guard Preston Kelly (Indianapolis, Ind.) made a layup with 20 seconds left to square the game at 76-76.

In the second overtime period, SUNY Morrisville netted the first seven points to jump out to a 83-76 lead with 1:29 left. GU missed its first three shots before Mbogo made a jumper with 1:04 on the clock as the Bison trailed by five, 83-78. SUNY Morrisville added four points from the free-throw line as the Mustangs recorded seven of their 11 points in the period from the charity stripe.

GU trailed briefly in the first half but held the lead for 17  minutes as the Bison led by 10 or more points, four different times. Gallaudet led 31-21 with 4:38 left before halftime. The Mustangs outscored the Bison 12-5 as GU took a 36-33 lead into intermission.

Mbogo had a career game with 20 points, six rebounds, seven field goals made in 37 minutes played, all marks are career highs.

Junior guard Rory Lewis (Frederick, Md.) recorded 16 points as he made 3 of 7 shots from 3-point range. Senior guard Corey Smith (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore guard Jake Schwall (Fishers, Ind.) finished with nine points each. Kelly and sophomore forward Brandon Chung (Kahului, Hawaii) tallied eight points each.

SUNY Morrisville was led by Tron Smith and Jordan Coard who scored 25 and 20 points, respectively. Coard completed the double-double with a game-high 16 rebounds.
