ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - For the second straight game, the Gallaudet University men's basketball team needed overtime to determine the outcome of its United East Conference game. The Bison were on the wrong end of the 68-60 overtime contest here Wednesday night against St. Mary's College of Maryland in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.
Gallaudet (1-12, 0-4 United East) entered the game looking to pick up its second win over St. Mary's (7-6, 2-2 United East) this season and got off on the right foot in the first half. The Bison scored the game's first points and later used a 13-1 run to take 23-14 lead with 5:26 left before intermission. GU pushed the lead to double digits and took a 31-19 advantage into halftime. GU shot 45.8 percent from the field in the first half, including four 3-pointers and five free-throws made.
GU opened the second half with a 3-pointer from junior guard Rory Lewis (Frederick, Md.) just seconds in as the Bison led by 15 points. The Seahawks used a 10-0 run to get back into the game as they only trailed by five, 38-33, at the 13:50 mark.
The Bison continued to hold the lead for the next 10 minutes before Hollique Johnson drained a 3-pointer to give the Seahawks a 50-48 lead with 3:14 left in regulation. This was St. Mary's first lead since 13-10 at the 8:51 mark in the first half.
Sophomore guard Malosi Viena (Waipahu, Hawaii) made three key free throws and Lewis knocked down a third 3-pointer to help push the game to overtime. Viena had a chance to give GU a lead but missed the second attempt of his free throws at the 48-second mark. Both teams missed jumpers in the closing seconds as the game continued for an additional five minutes.
In overtime, it was all St. Mary's as the Seahawks made two baskets and made 10 of 12 shots from the free-throw line to earn their seventh win of the season. GU didn't make a field goal until the 1-minute mark as it trailed, 61-57. The host iced the game with free throws as they made 7 of 8 in the final 56 seconds.
Lewis finished the game with 11 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Preston Kelly (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Viena added nine points each in the loss.
St. Mary's was paced by Jordan Goodwin's 18-point game as the Seahawks' starting five scored nine or more points each.
