Box Score READING, Pa. - A late ninth-inning rally came up short here Friday for Gallaudet University's baseball team as it lost, 6-5, to Penn St.-Berks in a United East Conference game.
Gallaudet (5-27, 1-15 United East) scored two runs in the top of the ninth to trim the Nittany Lions lead to one, 6-5. Senior Winston Lane III (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) doubled home juniors Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) and Austin Sliva-Wynne (Richmond, Texas) but Lane got thrown out at third base on a close play at the bag. That was GU's second out of the inning and the next batter struck out to end the game.
The Bison scored first in the top of the fourth inning with three runs on three hits and three errors made by the Nittany Lions. Sophomore Joshua Dugan (San Antonio, Texas) drove in a run on a dropped sacrifice fly. Freshman Johnathan Guerrero (Indio, Calif.) singled to right field to plate Sliva-Wynne. Sophomore Bryan Ramos-Navarro (Springfield, Mass.) followed with a RBI single to plate Lane. GU was poised to score more as it left the bases loaded as the next three batters struck out.
Penn St.-Berks (13-15, 6-10 United East) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with one run and exploded for three runs in the sixth. The Nittany Lions took a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth as they scored two more runs with a sacrifice fly and they stole home plate.
Lane (2-for-4) and Sliva-Wynne (2-for-5) led the Bison with two hits and one and two runs scored, respectively. Penn St.-Berks designated hitter Chad Evans finished the game with a 3-for-4 line with three runs scored and one RBI while outfielder Griffin Kay drove in four runs on two hits.
Guerrero (2-6) recorded his first collegiate complete game as he allowed six runs (four earned) on 10 hits, walked four and struck out three in eight innings of work. Penn St.-Berks starting pitcher Josh Miller (3-4) went the distance and allowed five runs (one earned) on 10 hits, walked one and struck out 11.
