Box Score WASHINGTON - On an unseasonably warm Sunday afternoon, the Gallaudet University baseball team dropped a 14-4 game to Christopher Newport University in non-conference play at Hoy Field.
Christopher Newport (9-4) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before Gallaudet (3-7) got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Junior outfielder Austin Sliva-Wynne (Richmond, Texas.) got hit by the pitch to lead things off. Senior second baseman Frank Diaz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) slammed a triple to left-center field to score Sliva-Wynne. The next batter, sophomore Joshua Dugan (San Antonio, Texas.) got hit by the pitch to place runners at the corners. GU then pulled off a double steal as Diaz broke towards home on the pitch and got hung up in a run down before CNU's first baseman only tagged Diaz with the glove while the ball was in his hand. Diaz was ruled safe at home while Dugan took second base and the Bison were only down one run, 3-2. GU ended the inning with a ground out and flew into a double play as Dugan got thrown out at the plate.
Gallaudet added one run in the fourth and seventh innings.
In the fourth, Austin Sliva-Wynne doubled to left-center field, stole third and scampered home after a CNU catcher error on the throw down.
In the seventh, sophomore Shea Sliva-Wynne (Richmond, Texas.) drove a single past the CNU pitcher and up the middle to reach base. Shea Sliva-Wynne scored moments later on a RBI-single by junior Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.).
Drolsbaugh (0-3) took the loss on the mound for GU as he allowed nine runs on 12 hits, walked one and struck out two in 4.2 innings pitched. The Bison used three different relievers to close out the nine-inning game.
CNU starting pitcher Jack Anderson (1-0) picked up the win as he surrendered three runs (two earned) on two hits, no walks and six strikeouts. The Captains had 12 extra-base hits including two home runs.
