Bison sweep doubleheader with Clarks Summit with back-to-back shutouts

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader here Saturday afternoon at Hoy Field as the Bison defeated Clarks Summit University 9-0 and 13-0.

Gallaudet (3-6) overwhelmed Clarks Summit (0-3) with the bats as they scored early and often in both games. The Bison pitching delivered on the mound as the Bison posted back-to-back shutouts.

Game 1: Gallaudet 9, Clarks Summit 0
Gallaudet scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning when freshman Jaylen Johnson (Dublin, Calif.) singled through the right side of the infield to bring home freshman Johnathan Guerrero (Indio, Calif.), who had singled two batters prior.

The Bison continued their offensive attack in the third as they scored three runs on three hits. Senior third baseman Winston Lane III (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) led things off with a double down the left field line. Sophomore catcher Salvador Diaz (Norwalk, Calif.) tripled to right-center field. Junior Austin Sliva-Wynne (Richmond, Texas.) doubled to left-center field to plate Diaz and later scored on a Joshua Dugan (San Antonio, Texas) sacrifice fly as GU led 4-0.

In the fourth, Lane tripled to center field to bring home fellow senior Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.), who walked moments before.

Drolsbaugh got in on the action in the four-run sixth inning as he doubled to center field to plate Johnson, who tripled minutes before. Lane singled home Drolsbaugh and Diaz reached on a hit. Sliva-Wynne plated Lane on a single as GU recorded five straight hits to cause Clarks Summit to change pitchers. That ended the day for Defenders' starting pitcher Keegan Laman (0-1) who lasted into the sixth inning where he allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 13 hits, walked three and struck out five.

A CSU throwing error allowed Diaz to score from third base as GU led 9-0 heading into the final inning.

Sophomore starting pitcher Shea Sliva-Wynne (Richmond, Texas) threw a complete game shutout as he only issued one walk and struck out a career best nine batters to earn his first win of the season.

Game 2: Gallaudet 13, Clarks Summit 0
Gallaudet's offense continued to roll in the second game as the Bison picked up where they left off against the Defenders.

GU took advantage of three errors made by the Defenders in the first inning as the Bison scored six runs on five hits.

The Bison added a run in the second and third innings before they went out of the yard in the fourth. Dugan and sophomore Bryan Ramos-Navarro (Springfield, Mass.) recorded RBI doubles to get things started in the fourth. Johnson then blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence for his first career homer. Drolsbaugh followed with an inside-the-park home run as GU led by 13.

Guerrero (2-1) took the win as he pitched six scoreless innings where he surrendered three hits, walked three and struck out a career-high nine.

UP NEXT
GU turns around and will host Christopher Newport University (8-4) tomorrow (Sunday, March 6) at 1 p.m. for a nine-inning game.
