Box Score 2 WASHINGTON - On a frigid and blustery Sunday evening, Gallaudet University played host to Penn College of Technology in a United East Conference baseball doubleheader at Hoy Field before a few brave souls, who sat in the elements as temperatures plummeted and the winds howled through the night sky with some snow flurries mixed in from time-to-time. Gallaudet (5-15, 1-4 United East) held a lead over Penn College (9-9, 3-2 United East) in the first game before the Wildcats rallied in the seventh inning to win, 8-5, and the Bison got shut out in the second game, 16-0.
Game 1: Penn College 8, Gallaudet 5
Gallaudet's bats came alive in the bottom of the third inning as the Bison scored four runs on four hits to break-up the scoreless game and stake an early 4-0 lead. Junior Frank Diaz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) came through with a two-run single to right field to plate the first two runs of the game. Junior Austin Sliva-Wynne (Richmond, Texas) followed with a single to put runners at the corners. On the next play, Diaz and Sliva-Wynne pulled off a double steal as GU led 3-0. Sliva-Wynne later scored on a RBI single by sophomore Joshua Dugan (San Antonio, Texas).
GU took the 4-0 lead into the fifth inning but several defensive miscues made by the Bison allowed the Wildcats to extend the inning and score three times.
The Bison answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning against Penn College. Sophomore Shea Sliva-Wynne (Richmond, Texas) reached on an error and later stole second base. Junior Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) grounded out to the shortstop but the quick Shea Sliva-Wynne, who was running on contact, raced around third base and dodged a tag attempt from the Wildcat catcher to score GU's fifth run of the game.
Gallaudet took a 5-3 lead into the seventh and final inning of the first game.
A lead-off single, a Bison error and a hit by the pitch ended the day for Gallaudet starting pitcher Johnathan Guerrero (Indio, Calif.), who pitched six strong innings where he allowed six runs (two earned) on six hits, four walks and struck out four. Drolsbaugh came on in relief of Guerrero to throw the final inning. Penn College scored five runs on four hits to take an 8-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
GU led off the bottom half with a walk before the Wildcats retired the side to end the game.
Game 2: Penn College 16, Gallaudet 0
In the second game, Penn College starting pitcher Ben Bretzman (1-2) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before the Bison broke things up with a Drolsbaugh single through the right-side of the infield.
Penn College scored a run in every inning but the fourth in the nine-inning game.
The Bison recorded their second hit in the eighth when freshman outfielder Jaylen Johnson (Dublin, Calif.) singled off reliever Samuel Zeigler, who picked up the three-inning save. Bretzman and Zeigler combined to strikeout 11 batters.
Gallaudet starting pitcher Shea Sliva-Wynne (1-2) took the loss as he allowed seven runs (four earned) on seven hits, four walks and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched. GU pitchers combined to strikeout nine Wildcats and only surrendered five earned runs as the Bison made nine errors in the field.
