Box Score WASHINGTON - On a unseasonably warm Friday afternoon at Hoy Field, the Gallaudet University baseball team opened their conference schedule with a tough 10-8 loss to Wells College.
Gallaudet (4-12, 0-1 United East) scored runs in its first four innings and held a 7-5 lead for three innings before Wells (4-9, 1-0 United East) rallied to take the lead and eventually the game.
GU did not wait to get on the scoreboard as it scored twice in the first inning. Sophomore catcher Salvador Diaz (Norwalk, Calif.) slammed a double to center field to drive home juniors Frank Diaz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) and Austin Sliva-Wynne (Richmond, Texas).
The Bison scored one run in the second and third innings to tie the game at 4-4.
Diaz delivered the big blow in the bottom of the fourth inning with a three-run home run over the left field fence as Gallaudet took a 7-5 lead.
Wells rallied in the eighth with four runs and tacked on one insurance run in the ninth to take a 10-7 lead.
The Bison tried to mount their own rally in the bottom of the ninth but only drove in one run as the Express took the first of three games at Hoy Field this weekend between the conference foes.
Sophomore Shea Sliva-Wynne (Richmond, Texas) started on the mound for the Bison and got the buff and blue into the eighth inning before he gave way to his brother, Austin.
