TOWSON, Md. - A last-second jumper at the buzzer didn't fall for the Gallaudet University men's basketball team on the road Wednesday night at Goucher College as the Gophers celebrated a 54-52 victory.
Gallaudet (1-7) trailed the entire game against Goucher (2-6) but the Bison were in position to win or force overtime in the closing seconds at the Decker Sports & Recreation Center. The game saw two ties; one in the opening minute (2-2) and the second in the final minute (52-52).
Junior guard Rory Lewis (Frederick, Md.) drained a 3-pointer with 58 seconds left to knot the game at 52. Goucher missed a 3-point shot on its next possession but John Dixon (four rebounds) came down with a key rebound, which led to a Jacob Morgan jumper to put the Gophers up two with 21 seconds left.
After a Goucher 30-second timeout, Gallaudet was on the move in the offensive zone as Lewis began to drive from the top of the key but the Bison called timeout with seven seconds to draw up the final play. Out of the timeout, the Bison struggled to get the ball inbounds and subsequently didn't get the look they wanted. In a mad scramble near the baseline, sophomore forward Brandon Chung (Kahului, Hawaii) took a baseline jumper in front of the Bison bench but the shot missed as time expired.
Senior guard Corey Smith (Miami, Fla.) led the Bison with 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Fellow senior guard Preston Kelly (Indianapolis, Ind.) netted nine points, all from 3-point shots, off the bench. Lewis finished with eight points, eight rebounds and two assists. Sophomore guard Malosi Viena (Waipahu, Hawaii) tallied seven points. The Bison made 7 of 22 shots from 3-point range while Goucher was held to just three 3-pointers on 26 attempts (11.5 percent).
Morgan led the Gophers with a game-high 16 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals. Guard Josh Lichti added 11 points and Darrell Green chipped in nine points as Goucher won its second game of the season.
Goucher jumped out to a 12-2 lead midway through the first half and took a 32-24 lead into halftime. Gallaudet outscored Goucher 28-22 in the second half.
