Fourth-quarter shooting woes distress Bison at Goucher

TOWSON, Md. - The Gallaudet University women's basketball team dropped a 49-36 non-conference game to Goucher College here Wednesday night in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.

Foul trouble plagued Gallaudet (0-6) in the game as junior forward Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) picked up three fouls in the first half and fouled out four minutes into the fourth quarter. GU led 18-14 when Perry got whistled for her third foul at the 2:49 mark in the second quarter. Goucher (2-4) took advantage and outscored the Bison, 7-2, to take a 21-20 lead into halftime.

GU led for several minutes in the third quarter and was within striking distance, 39-34, when Perry fouled out of the game with 6:13 left. The Gophers pulled away on a 10-2 run to secure their second win of the season.

Perry was a force for the Bison as she scored a team-high 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds, made four steals and blocked one shot. Sophomore forward Anya Pothorski (Indianapolis, Ind.) concluded the game with eight points, five rebounds and three blocks. Freshman forward Olivia Brown (St. Augustine, Fla.) matched Perry with a team-best eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. The game marked the season debut for junior guard Sunita Schmidjorg (Austin, Texas).

Goucher guard Kyla Smith led all-scorers with 24 points and 12 rebounds as Smith made 5 of 6 shots, including two 3-pointers, in the fourth quarter to tally half of her total point output. Forward Kendra Lawrence recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds and three blocks. The Gophers shot 63.6 percent (7-for-11) in the fourth quarter while GU only made 1 of 16 shots (6.3 percent).

Gallaudet returns home to begin United East Conference play against Penn State Harrisburg (3-4) on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m.
