WASHINGTON - It was a much-needed home game for the Gallaudet University women's basketball team here Tuesday evening in the Field House as the Bison made their season debut at home after four straight road games to begin the 2022-23 slate.
Gallaudet (0-5) got off to a slow start against Marymount (Va.) University as the Saints (8-1) raced out to a 25-13 lead in the opening 10 minutes and took a 48-23 lead into intermission before pulling away in the second half en route to a 72-40 win. Ironically, this is the third time in five games that GU had finished a game with exactly 40 points.
For the second consecutive game, Gallaudet's defense made 11 blocked shots. Junior forward Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.), the United East Women's Basketball Player of the Week, finished the game with five blocks to go with a team-high 18 points, six rebounds, one steal and one assist. Sophomore center Anya Pothorski (Indianapolis, Ind.) matched her career best with four blocks down low against the Saints and added six points and eight boards. Sophomore guards Shayla Rochette (Worcester, Mass.) and Jewel Rocha (Austin, Texas) tallied the other blocked shots with one each. Freshman forward Olivia Brown (St. Augustine, Fla.) was the other Bison in double figures with 10 points, eight rebounds, two steals and one assist.
