Gallaudet defeats St. Mary's (Md.) for the first time in 16 years

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 64-56 win over St. Mary's College of Maryland here Sunday in the DuFour Athletic Center in the consolation game of the Battle of D.C. & Maryland. 

Gallaudet (1-2) snaps a 15-game losing streak to St. Mary's (2-2) dating back to the 2005-06 season. The last time GU defeated the Seahawks was a 72-53 win in the Field House on Feb. 8, 2006.

Senior guard Corey Smith (Miami, Fla.) scored a season best 17 points as he made six field goals and added five points from the free-throw line. Smith added eight rebounds, three steals and two assists. Sophomore forward Brandon Chung (Kahului, Hawaii) added 13 points, three rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist while fellow Hawaiian Malosi Viena (Waipahu, Hawaii) recorded 11 points and two blocks as he was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, including one of GU's two 3-pointers.

The Bison got off to another hot start as they scored the first seven points of the game and later led 16-8 and 23-17 before the Seahawks came back and knotted the game 30-30 at the half.

In the second half, Gallaudet built a seven-point lead, 42-35, seven minutes into the second half and held the lead for the final 17 minutes and 49 seconds of the game.

St. Mary's had three players score 10 points each in the loss.

Gallaudet will travel to Salisbury University (2-3) on Tuesday, Nov. 22, for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference game before the Fall Break.
