Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team tipped off its 2022-23 season on Sunday afternoon with a short trip to Burr Gymnasium on the campus of Howard University. Howard won the Battle of the Bison with a 108-56 victory over Gallaudet.

Gallaudet scored the game's first points when sophomore forward Brandon Chung (Kahului, Hawaii) made a layup in the opening minute as the GU Bison led 2-0. Gallaudet (0-1) hung around with the Division I program for most of the first half as it only trailed by seven points on several different occasions. Howard closed out the opening half on a 24-8 run.

Senior guard Corey Smith (Miami, Fla.) led all-scorers in the first half with nine points as he finished with a team best 16 points. Junior guard Rory Lewis (Frederick, Md.) recorded seven points while Malosi Viena (Waipahu, Hawaii) and Blessed Mbogo (Silver Spring, Md.) finished with six each.

Howard outscored Gallaudet 63-34 in the second half.

The Howard Bison (2-2) had four players in double figures led by guard Marcus Dockery's 18-point game as he made 4 of 7 shots from 3-point range. Forward Reece Brown added 14 points and four rebounds while guard Elijah Hawkins tallied 15 points with nine coming from 3-pointers. Guard Bryce Harris was the fourth Howard Bison player in double digits with 10 points.

This was the 13th all-time meeting between the two programs and the second consecutive season in a row. Gallaudet is 1-12 all-time against Howard. The GU Bison defeated the HU Bison, 58-55, during the 1962-63 season. The two schools first played each other during the 1956-57 season, that began a run of 11 straight years these two programs played each other.

Gallaudet and Howard are separated by a two-mile stretch of Florida Avenue in the District of Columbia traveling from Northeast to Northwest where HU's campus is located off Georgia Ave. Plus, the two schools share the same Bison mascot name.
