Bison allow Lancaster Bible to charge past them in second half

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team scored a season-high 82 points here Saturday evening against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival Lancaster Bible College but it wasn't enough. The host Chargers erased a nine-point halftime deficit and scored 55 second-half points to defeat the Bison, 88-82, before a crowd of 497.

The two teams made 13 3-pointers each as both teams shot well from the field.

The first three baskets made by Gallaudet (4-16, 4-7 NEAC) were 3-pointers in the first half. The Bison led for the majority of the first half and took a 42-33 lead into intermission.

In the second half, GU junior guard Preston Kelly (Fishers, Ind.) made two layups as the Bison led 46-33 with 17:52 left in regulation. Kelly finished the game one point shy of his career best. Kelly tallied 30 points as he made 10 of 16 shots from the field, including six 3-pointers.

Lancaster Bible (10-10, 8-3 NEAC) then went on a run as it outscored Gallaudet, 19-3, in a four-minute span to take the lead for good. Sophomore guard Jordan Shewbridge made 11 of the 19 points during that run. Shewbridge finished with a new career-high 36 points as he scored 26 of those points in the second half. Shewbridge went a perfect 5-for-5 from 3-point range in the second half as he tallied seven 3-pointers in the game.

GU got within two points, thrice, late in the game but couldn't tie or take the lead back from the Chargers as they answered every time.

Senior guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) finished with 22 points, five rebounds, five assists, three steals and one block. Senior center Steve Valencia-Biskupiak (Riverside, Calif.) had an off-night with three points as he was saddled in foul trouble. Freshman guard Kalib Jones (Frederick, Md.) netted eight points, five rebounds and three assists. Three different Bison scored five points off the bench in the loss.
