Bison Baseball Classic comes to a close with two final games

WASHINGTON - The Bison Baseball Classic came to a close here Sunday as Muhlenberg College handed Gallaudet University a 15-4 loss at Hoy Field in the sixth and final game of the three-day tournament.

The Bison Baseball Classic featured four teams in Gallaudet, Gwynedd Mercy University, Muhlenberg and Stevenson University. The Mustangs from Stevenson (2-1) came back to defeat Muhlenberg, 9-8, in the bottom of the ninth earlier on Sunday. Stevenson, Muhlenberg and Gwynedd Mercy finished 2-1 in the Bison Baseball Classic while Gallaudet went 0-3.

Gallaudet (2-3) hung around with Muhlenberg (2-1) for the majority of the game before the Mules scored seven runs in the final two innings.

The Bison got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth when junior Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) singled through the right side of the infield to plate junior Frank Diaz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) as GU trailed 5-1. 

Diaz added a RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth to score senior Austin Altman (Irvine, Calif.) after the Mules scored three times in the top half of the frame.

Gallaudet capped its scoring with two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Drolsbaugh tripled to right center field with two outs. Senior Gilwon Seo (Hongseong, South Korea) singled to center field to bring home Drolsbaugh. Senior Winston Lane III (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) doubled in Seo before the Mules struck out the last batter.

Drolsbaugh got the start on the mound for the Bison and threw six innings where he allowed eight runs (five earned) on six hits, walked three and struck out two. 

Muhlenberg starting pitcher Paul Poppert (1-0) got the win as he threw six innings and allowed two runs, three walks and struck out seven. Reliever Jake Lebovitch threw three innings of relief to get the save.

UP NEXT
Gallaudet will have time to rest up this week before hosting Geneva College (0-0) on Saturday, Feb. 29, at noon in a non-conference doubleheader.
