Bison bounce into win column with road victory at Penn St.-Abington

ABINGTON, Pa. - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team snapped its four-game losing streak here Saturday with a 70-53 win over Penn St.-Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game.

Gallaudet (3-15, 3-6 NEAC) completes the season sweep of Penn St.-Abington (7-11, 2-7 NEAC) as the Bison won, 67-65, in the Field House two weeks ago (Jan. 15).

GU used a 20-3 run midway through the first half to break open a 7-7 game and take a 27-10 lead with five minutes left before the half. Senior guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) scored Gallaudet's final five points as he finished with 15 points in the opening half where the Bison led 34-17.

In the second half, both teams scored 36 points each. 

Valencia led all-scorers with 27 points as he made 10 of 20 shots from the field, including six 3-pointers, to go with eight steals, two assists and two rebounds. Senior center Steve Valencia-Biskupiak (Riverside, Calif.) added 14 points, six boards and four assists. 

Penn St.-Abington guard Amir Hill led the Nittany Lions with 13 points and four boards in the loss.

  • Junior guard Preston Kelly (Fishers, Ind.) finished with seven points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals
  • Freshman guard Kalib Jones (Frederick, Md.) matched his career-high with seven points
  • Sophomore forward Matt Sherman (Angora, Minn.) grabbed six boards
  • GU scored 36 points in the paint
  • The Bison scored 30 points off 26 Nittany Lion turnovers
  • Gallaudet made a season-high 17 steals
  • Both teams netted 14 second-chance points
  • PSA held a 34-33 edge in rebounds

GU returns home to host Penn St.-Berks (2-15, 2-7 NEAC) on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 5 p.m. The Bison lost, 89-81, to the Nittany Lions several weeks ago (Jan. 18) on the road.
