GU splits tri-match at Penn St.-Harrisburg as Bison defeat Royals

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Gallaudet University split its tri-match at Penn St.-Harrisburg here Sunday as the Bison women's volleyball team lost its conference game to the host Lions, 3-1, and defeated Eastern Mennonite University at Capital Union Building by the same 3-1 margin.

Gallaudet (2-13) snaps a five-match losing streak with the 25-18, 25-19,16-25, 25-17 win over the Royals.

Juniors Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) and Elina Rubinshteyn (Austin, Texas) led the way with 15 and 13 kills, respectively, while Lewis made 15 digs and three aces. Freshman setter Demi Bingham (Jefferson, Md.) passed out 37 assists. Sophomore Mia Upchurch (Austin, Texas) matched Lewis with 15 digs. Freshman middle hitter Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) added seven kills and two block solos. Junior Brynn Schmidt (Bozeman, Mont.) tallied eight kills.

EMU was led by Hannah Johnson's double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. 

In its first match of the day, Gallaudet fell 25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 10-25 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest. The Bison (0-2 NEAC) won the first set as they recorded 13 kills. GU hung tough in the second and third sets but came up short 22-25 in both sets.

Penn St.-Harrisburg (8-3, 2-0 NEAC) won the fourth set going away as they had runs of seven and six points to win 10-25.

Lewis led the way with 16 kills, eight digs, two block assists, one assist and one ace. Rubinshteyn added 10 kills while Upchurch made 17 digs and one ace. Bingham passed out 34 assists to go with nine digs and two aces. 

The Lions were led by Alexis Imbler's 12 kills, 14 assists, nine digs, one block assist and one assist.

Eastern Mennonite (8-4) defeated Penn St.-Harrisburg (8-4) in the other match of the tri-meet. The Royals won 28-26, 25-23, 24-26, 27-25.
