Bison offense goes cold in second half against Catholic in Battle of D.C. & Maryland

FREDERICK, Md. - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team dropped the consolation game of the Battle of D.C. & Maryland here Saturday afternoon as the Bison lost 80-60 to the Catholic University of America in the BB&T Arena on the campus of Hood College.

Gallaudet (0-3) led early on against Catholic (1-2) as the Bison jumped out to a 15-8 lead just seven minutes into the game. Catholic used a 21-9 run to take a 29-24 lead at the 3:22 mark. GU closed the gap to two points, 35-33, at the break.

In the second half, Catholic scored the first 11 points before senior guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) drained a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 10, 46-36, at the 17:34 mark. The Cardinals controlled the game in the second half even though GU cut the margin to single digits at the 10:23 mark when senior center Steve Valencia-Biskupiak (Riverside, Calif.) made a layup with 10:23 left in regulation.

That was Gallaudet's last field goal for the game.

GU went 0-for-11 from the field the rest of the game including 0-for-6 from 3-point range. The Bison made 9 of 12 free throw attempts in the final 10 minutes of play.

Catholic outscored Gallaudet 45-27 in the second half.

Valencia led all-scorers with 27 points as he made four 3-pointers and went 9-for-11 from the free throw line. He added eight rebounds, three steals and one assist. Valencia-Biskupiak added 13 points off the bench. Junior guard Preston Kelly (Fishers, Ind.) passed out a team-high five assists, grabbed three rebounds, made two steals and scored five points. Sophomore forward Matt Sherman (Angora, Minn.) scored six points, four rebounds and one block in the loss.

Catholic had four player in double figures led by forward Riley Hayes' double-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
