Bison defeat Wisconsin Lutheran, 14-9

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Gallaudet University baseball team defeated Wisconsin Lutheran College, 14-9, here Thursday at Terry Park.

Gallaudet (3-11-1) picked up its first win during the Spring Break trip as it scored 14 runs on 13 hits and took advantage of six errors by the Warriors.

The Bison scored the game's first run but trailed 4-3 heading into the sixth inning. The two teams scored twice in the sixth before GU took control of the game in the seventh. Gallaudet scored five times thanks to four hits and one error in the seventh. GU put the game away with three runs in the eighth and one insurance run in the ninth.

In the decisive seventh inning, junior Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) singled home two runs followed by RBI singles by junior Ryan Gilbert (Mount Dora, Fla.) and sophomore Winston Lane (Brooklyn Center, Minn.). Upton drove in three runs and scored twice while Gilbert finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBI.

GU starting pitcher Frank Diaz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) got into the sixth inning before turning things over to the bullpen. Diaz threw 5.1 innings, allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits, walked seven and struck out one. Sophomore reliever Robersy Delgado (Tampa, Fla.) picked up his first win of the season as he threw 1.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits, one walk and one strikeout.

Wisconsin Lutheran (2-5) starting pitcher Ryan Ruechel logged four innings where he allowed two unearned runs on four hits and four walks before turning things over to four different relievers. Jacob Smrz (0-1) took the loss as he allowed five unearned runs in 1.1 innings of work on four hits and two walks. First baseman Joe Hanson led the Warriors going 3-for-5 at the plate and two runs.
