Bison begin Spring Break trip against Wilmington (Ohio)

| Box Score 2

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Gallaudet University baseball kicked off its Spring Break trip here Sunday against Wilmington (Ohio) College at the Player Development Complex on Field 5. The Bison lost a pitchers' duel, 2-1, in the first game and dropped the second game 7-2.

Wilmington 2, Gallaudet 1
Sophomore starting pitcher Frank Diaz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) and Wilmington's Jarret Trautman (1-0) threw the first five innings for their respective ball clubs. Diaz got into the sixth inning with two outs before being lifted after he gave up two runs (one earned) on seven hits, walked two and struck out three.

The Quakers got on the scoreboard in the top of the third with a Josh Chua RBI double to score Daniel Hayes.

Gallaudet answered back with its own RBI double off the bat of Winston Lane (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) in the bottom of the fourth. Lane's hit scored junior Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.).

A fielding error by the Bison in the sixth allowed Wilmington to take the lead. Diaz loaded the bases with two outs before freshman Quintan Polito (Omaha, Neb.) came in on relief and got the next batter to pop out to end the threat.

The Bison tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth and got runners on second and third before two batters struck out and one flied out to end the sixth.

Wilmington 7, Gallaudet 2
The Quakers (2-4) jumped out quickly on Upton (1-3), GU's starting pitcher, who allowed six runs on six hits and one walk in just 1.1 innings worked.

Gallaudet (2-9-1) had a hard time digging out of the 6-0 hole after the first two innings. Wilmington plated a seventh run in the bottom of the fourth.

GU got on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the fifth. Senior Jake Grindstaff (New Market, Md.) hit a RBI triple to score freshman Dante Paulone (Fishers, Ind.). Fellow senior Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) drove in Grindstaff with a RBI double.

Wilmington starting pitcher Lance Fleischman (1-0) picked up his first win of the season.
