Gallaudet falls to Muhlenberg on second day of Bison Baseball Classic

Box Score

WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University fell behind early on a wet, cold and raw Saturday afternoon at Hoy Field against Muhlenberg College. The Bison (2-2), the visiting team in the game, batted first before the Mules (2-0) scored five times in the bottom half of the first frame en route to a 12-4 win.

This was the second of three days of the Bison Baseball Classic at Hoy Field. In the first game on Saturday, Muhlenberg shutout Southern Vermont College, 8-0.

Down 7-0 in the third inning, Gallaudet got on the scoreboard with two runs. Junior Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) hit a sacrifice fly to score senior OF Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas), who doubled to left field to lead-off the third. Sophomore Winston Lane (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) followed with a single through the left side before senior Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) doubled Lane in to cut the Mules lead to 7-2.

The Bison manufactured two more runs in the top of the fourth to cut the Muhlenberg lead to three, 7-4. Freshman Dante Paulone (Fishers, Ind.) ran home on freshman Darren Drolsbaugh's (Lansdale, Pa.) fielders choice with the bases loaded. Upton then singled to center field to plate senior catcher Jake Grindstaff (New Market, Md.) before Lane ended the rally with a fly out to right field.

The Mules added three runs in the seventh and two more runs in the eighth.

Gallaudet freshman pitcher Ethan Denson (Huffman, Texas) took his first loss in the buff and blue as he allowed seven runs on eight hits, walked four and struck out six in six innings of work. Sophomore Frank Diaz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) pitched the final two innings in relief where he surrendered five runs (three earned) on five hits and one walk.

Muhlenberg's RJ Hennessey (1-0) relieved starting pitcher Truman Devitt in the fifth inning and pitched the next five innings in scoreless relief to pick-up the win. He struck out four batters, walked one and allowed one hit.
