Bison conclude season in NEAC semifinal round

MARCY, N.Y. - The Gallaudet University women's basketball season came to an end here Saturday night as the Bison lost 94-72 to Keuka College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) semifinal round on the campus of SUNY Poly.

Gallaudet finishes the season with a 13-14 record, a 10-win improve from a year ago, while Keuka (20-5) advances to Sunday's championship where they will face the host Wildcats at 2 p.m. SUNY Poly (21-6) defeated Penn St.-Abington (15-11) by two points, 58-56.

Keuka jumped out to an early lead before freshman guard Emelia Beldon (Frederick, Md.) made a layup to knot the game at 12-12 with 2:25 left in the first quarter. From there it was Keuka the rest of the way. The Wolves led 17-14 after the first and went on a 14-0 run to start the second quarter as they outscored the Bison 26-8. Keuka led 43-22 at halftime.

The Wolves held a 29-23 edge in the third quarter before Gallaudet outscored Keuka in the fourth quarter, 27-22.

Junior guard Hannah Neild (Lichfield, N.H.) scored a game-high 36 points as she made 10 of 27 shots from the field and went 13-for-15 from the free throw line. Neild added eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block. Junior guard Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) was the other Bison to reach double figures with 12. Senior forward Kelsey Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.), junior forward Kelli Barnes (Cliffside, N.C.) and Beldon scored six points each. Hudson grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and had two steals.

Keuka guard Sam Laranjo scored a team best 17 points while forward Amanda Wood added 12 points and eight rebounds. Eleven of Keuka's 12 players scored points in the win.

This concludes the season for the Bison, who will graduate Hudson and Ashmore but will return its main scorers in Neild, Shysh and Beldon to build-off of for 2018-19. Hudson concludes her career with 595 points, 825 rebounds, 115 steals, 97 assists and 15 blocks in 91 games (67 starts) in four years. Ashmore tallied 206 points, 244 rebounds, 66 steals, 47 assists and 41 blocks in 62 games (22 starts) in three seasons.
