WASHINGTON - The men's basketball game here Saturday evening between Gallaudet University and Penn St.-Berks had a little bit of everything in this North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) tilt in the Field House on Padden Court before a crowd of 424. The game featured heartbreak, thrilling moments, a team's first win of the 2018-19 season and personal career milestone. Of course a game like that couldn't be jam-packed into 40 minutes so this conference game went an extra 10 minutes as Gallaudet won 104-100 in double overtime.

Gallaudet (1-6, 1-1 NEAC) had chances to win the game in regulation and in the first overtime but poor free-throw shooting allowed Penn St.-Berks (0-9, 0-2 NEAC) to stay alive and continue to compete for another period.

GU missed its last four free throws in the first overtime while the Nittany Lions made two free throws to force a second five-minute overtime period.

Sophomore guard Shawn Daniels (Lakeland, Fla.) drained a big 3-pointer, his only points in the game, with 21 seconds left to give Gallaudet a 102-100 lead after the game had been tied for the 11th time. Penn St.-Berks missed two free throws while junior guard Trace Martin (Shingle Springs, Calif.) hit his two attempts to seal GU's first win of the season.

Junior guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) entered the contest in search of his 1,000th career point as he was 20 points shy. He had a slow start in the first half, where he scored three points and was hampered with two early personal fouls. Valencia heated up in the second half with 16 points as he made 6 of 11 shots from the field, including two 3-pointers. Luckily, the need for overtime allowed Valencia to notch his 1,000th career point with a free throw made at the 2:34 mark in the first overtime period before the home crowd. Play was stopped for a brief moment as Valencia was recognized for becoming the 27th Gallaudet men's basketball player to record 1,000 career points.

Valencia finished with a team-high 28 points to go with four steals and two rebounds. Freshman guard Corey Smith (Miami, Fla.) scored a career best 27 points as he made 9 of 19 shots from the field to go with eight steals, six assists and five rebounds. Martin and junior center Steve Valencia-Biskupiak (Riverside, Calif.) added 12 points each while senior forward Jamal Garner (Jacksonville, Ill.) scored 10 points and six rebounds.

The Nittany Lions were paced by forward Matt Seip's game-high 31 points while forward Latrell Carroll had a monster double-double with 22 points and 20 rebounds. Three other players finished in double figures including Monty Farmer (16), E'Drise Hightower (12) and Brandon Wise (11).

Penn St.-Berks led 40-36 in the first half after it shot 57.7 percent from the field and made six 3-pointers. GU outscored the visitors by four points, 44-40, in the second half as the game ended regulation knotted at 80-80.
