Bison tangle with Cardinals in Battle of D.C. & Maryland consolation game

WASHINGTON - The second day of the Battle of D.C. & Maryland Tournament came to a close here Sunday in the Field House as a champion was crowned and an all-tournament team announced.

Gallaudet University stumbled against The Catholic University of America in the men's basketball consolation game as the Bison (0-4) lost, 96-69, to the Cardinals (1-2). GU senior forward Jamal Garner (Jacksonville, Ill.) led the team in rebounds (seven) and scored six points as he was selected to the all-tournament team. Catholic forward Riley Hayes netted a game-high 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as he was picked to the all-tournament team.

Hood College (4-1) won the championship game with a 94-82 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland (1-4) as sophomore guard Mason Wang scored 18 points, passed out six assists, grabbed five rebounds and made three steals en route to MVP honors. Hood's Anthony Pearson (22 points, five rebounds), St. Mary's Matt Ayoub (23 points), Phil Newsome (10 points, seven rebounds, five assists) were named to the all-tournament team.

The Bison had four scorers reach double figures as each player drained two 3-pointers. Junior guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) led the way with 14 points followed by fellow junior guard Trace Martin (Shingle Springs, Calif.) with 13 and freshmen guards Corey Smith (Miami, Fla.) and Dylan Sicoli (Austin, Texas) netted 10 points each.

Catholic led from start-to-finish and took a 46-26 lead into halftime and led comfortably in the second half.

In addition to Hayes the Cardinals had three other players score 16 or more points including Jimmy Golaszewski (18), Andre Mitchell (17) and Bryan Easton (16).

Gallaudet will travel down to Southside Virginia to face Hampden-Sydney College (1-1) in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 6 p.m.
