Bison bury Gophers in straight sets

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team made quick work of Goucher College in a non-conference game here Thursday night as they buried the Gophers 25-21, 25-16, 25-15.

Goucher (9-13) jumped out to a quick lead in the first set and racked up six of the first seven points. GU (12-12) responded as the starters came to life and gained the lead, 12-9. The Bison continued to hold a four-point lead before junior outside hitter Adele Daniels (Austin, Texas) sealed set win with one of her 14 kills off an assist from freshman setter Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas).

Gallaudet never looked back as they breezed through the next two sets. GU jumped to a quick lead in the second set, and maintained at least a three-point lead throughout the duration. 

In the third set, GU led from start to finish en route to a 10-point win.

Daniels nabbed a double-double in digs and kills with 14 each. Sophomore middle hitter Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) also recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. She added two service aces and one block. Junior outside hitter Tessa Lewis (Frederick, Md.) added 12 kills, while Giuntoli passed out a game-high 38 assists in the sweep.

Goucher was led by Greta Coss with 11 kills, followed by Kaya Melchor with six and two service aces. 

BISON TRACKS

  • Senior middle hitter Shua Clay (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) contributed seven kills and two blocks
  • Freshman setter Kelley Johnson (Wanamingo, Minn.) delivered one of GU's five service aces
  • Sophomore middle hitter Lauren Wellman (Austin, Texas) added a kill as soon as she stepped on the court in the third set
  • Gallaudet wore special pink uniforms as part of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Dig Pink initiative

UP NEXT
GU hosts a tri-meet on Saturday, Oct. 13, when the Bison welcome Hood College and Penn College to the Field House. Gallaudet goes up against Hood in a non-conference match at 11 a.m. Hood and Penn College will play at 1 p.m., followed by Gallaudet and Penn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game at 3 p.m.
