Gallaudet tripped up by Hood on the road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FREDERICK, Md. - The Gallaudet University baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games here Sunday afternoon as they took on Hood College. The Bison lost 11-7 in the first game and were shut out, 8-0, in the second game on the Frederick Community College field.

Game 1: Hood 11, Gallaudet 7
After falling behind, 3-1 in the first inning, Gallaudet's bats heated up in the second inning and scored six runs to take the lead from the Blazers. The Bison had six hits in the second inning, including three doubles. Freshman Austin Sliva-Wynne (Richmond, Texas) had a two-run double to highlight the frame. Four consecutive Bison batters recorded RBI off Hood starting pitcher Dylan Johnson before he was pulled in favor of Chris Devine (1-0).

The Blazers responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning off of senior starting pitcher Ian Evans (Murphy, N.C.). Josh Greenberg had a two-run single up the middle to complete the three-run frame.

GU clung to its one-run lead as the teams went into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Blazers' first two batters walked and moved around the bases due to wild pitches and a run scored off a failed pickoff attempt. Outfielder Cam Esposito doubled home the go-ahead run, 8-7, to give Hood its first lead since the first inning.

The Bison were retired in order in the sixth before the Blazers added three insurance runs in the bottom half to go up 11-7.

Evans lasted 3.2 innings where he allowed six runs on six hits, walked eight and struck out two. Junior Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) took the loss as she surrendered five runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks in 1.1 innings of relief.

Game 2: Hood 8, Gallaudet 0
Hood took a quick 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Gallaudet starting pitcher Frank Diaz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.).

The Blazers (11-14) scored at least a run in every inning but two. Gallaudet (5-21) recorded its first hit in the fourth inning when sophomore shortstop Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) singled up the middle. The hit broke up Brad Sawyer's (2-0) no-hit bid.

Senior middle infielder Blake Phillips (Dalton, Ga.) singled down the right field line in the fifth inning to tally the second Bison hit of the game.

Diaz (0-2) threw a complete game as he took the loss. He allowed eight runs (four earned) on 10 hits, walked two and struck out four.
