Bison baseball shut out by No. 1 Shenandoah

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University baseball team faced a stern test on a sun-soaked Sunday afternoon as it played host to Shenandoah University, the No. 1 ranked team in Division III. The Hornets shut out the Bison, 17-0, in the nine-inning non-conference game.

Shenandoah (22-1) sprayed 17 hits around Hoy Field, including eight extra-base hits, as it scored runs in seven of the nine frames. The Hornets jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and never looked back as it scored seven runs in the first three innings.

Hornets starting pitcher Reeves Lowry (1-0) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before freshman Frank Diaz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) broke things up with an infield hit. Diaz's hard hit to second base allowed him to reach safely.

Diaz added a double to left-center field in the bottom of the eighth as he finished the day 2-for-3. Freshman outfielder Austin Altman (Irvine, Calif.) had GU's other hit, a single to left field in the ninth inning.

Diaz started the day on the mound and took the loss as he allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, three walks and four strikeouts in four innings of work. GU (5-17) used a trio of pitchers to finish out the game as they surrendered 10 more runs to the visitors.

Lowry pitched seven shutout innings where he allowed one hit, two walks and struck out six batters.
