Bison compete fiercely with Bobcats on diamond

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University baseball team battled Frostburg State University and the cold temperatures on an overcast Sunday afternoon at Hoy Field.

GU (5-13) was up to the task as it scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-2 lead over the visiting Bobcats.

The Bison loaded the bases after a fielding error by the catcher with no outs. The next two Bison batters fouled out and struck out before GU went to work.

Junior outfielder Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) drew a walk to score GU's first run. Junior Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) singled to center field to plate two runs. Sophomore shortstop Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) drew a walk to load the bases, once more, as senior third baseman Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.) stepped to the plate. Crawford delivered a two-out single to left-center field as Gumm and Hayes scored. Gallaudet ran out of the inning as Upton was thrown out at third base on the play.

Frostburg (11-10) responded with its own five-run inning in the top of the third to regain the lead, 7-5.

The game picked up pace after the first three innings took one hour and 40 minutes to play as 12 runs and two pitching changes took place.

GU was down three, 8-5, as it went into the bottom of the sixth inning but the Bison scored a run to cut into the Bobcat lead. Gumm tripled to center field and scored on a Hayes single up the middle.

Freshman starting pitcher Austin Sliva-Wynne (Richmond, Texas) took the loss as he had to be pulled early in the third inning. Sliva-Wynne allowed seven runs (five earned) off nine hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

Frostburg starting pitcher Logan Corrigan was pulled after two innings as he allowed five unearned runs on four hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Garrett Wiles (2-0) entered from the bullpen and settled things down as he pitched four innings where he allowed one run on five hits, one walk and struck out two batters. Daniel Ryczek threw two scoreless innings of relief for the Bobcats. Cody Harman closed out the game with a scoreless ninth frame for second save of the season.
